On January 8, 1956, five young missionaries were speared to death by the Huaorani in Ecuador. These five were Jim Elliott, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming and Roger Youderian. The story of how their wives and children continued to establish strong relationships with the Huaroani is a powerful testimony to the power of the Gospel.
The new documentary Beyond the Gates is an excellent retelling of the story.
There will be a free screening of the abridged version of "Beyond the Gates" at Central Presbyterian Church, at 6:30 PM on January 7, 2006, the eve of the fiftieth anniversary of the killings.
This documentary is part of a series of events about the fiftieth anniversary of the modern-day martyrdom of these missionaries. There will also be a feature film "End of the Spear" released early in 2006.
